“Sustainability” is a term that is often used but rarely defined and often misunderstood. Our definition of sustainability includes two key elements. The first element – from the Brundtland Report – Our Common Future”, is that we must meet the needs of the future without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The second element of our approach to sustainability is that in determining the best action to take – we must balance a variety of perspectives – including economic needs, the impact on the environment and the social or “human” impacts of the choices. This is called “balancing the triple bottom line”.
